Irish presidential race

Michael D. Higgins is officially up against three Dragons.

Peter Casey, an Irish businessman who is based in Atlanta, Georgia, has secured a fourth local authority nomination — meaning that he is officially a candidate in the upcoming Irish presidential election.

Casey, who is the CEO of Claddagh resources, became the sixth official name on the ballot after winning the endorsements of Limerick City and County Council and Tipperary County Council. Casey had already won endorsements in Kerry and Clare.

Casey joins former Dragon’s Den investors Sean Gallagher and Gavin Duffy on ballot. Also vying for Áras is Senator Joan Freeman, who is the founder of Pieta House, and MEP Liadh Ní Riada, who has been nominated by Sinn Féin. The election will take place on October 26.

Earlier this week, Kevin Sharkey announced he was officially pulling out of the race to focus on his singing career. A poll published by the Sunday Business Post this weekend revealed that Michael D. Higgins has a strong lead over all potential competitors.
