The Irish forecaster has also outlined what the weather will be like for the Bank Holiday weekend and next week.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning for three Irish counties.

Already in effect, the alert applies to Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo and is valid until 6pm on Saturday (2 May).

The warning reads: "Scattered thunderstorms for a time today."

It also outlines the potential impact of the storms, which are the following: "Lightning activity, power outages, spot flooding [and] poor travel conditions."

Met Éireann's national forecast says many areas will become dry tonight, though outbreaks of rain and drizzle will persist in the east and south-east.

As for Sunday, the Irish meteorological service adds: "Mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle and patches of mist over the eastern half of the country; limited bright or sunny spells with showers further west.

"Some of the showers will turn heavy in the south-west later, with a chance of isolated thunderstorms. Highest temperatures of 11 to 16 degrees, coolest in the east, with light to moderate north to north-east breezes."

In terms of the Bank Holiday Monday and the following days, Met Éireann's overview reads: "Cool for the time of year as a northerly airflow is established over the country.

"While it will be quite cloudy at times, there will be plenty of dry weather for at least the first half of next week."
