Together For Yes hail referendum vote as a “vote for dignity and decency”

Alan Loughnane

“The people have heard us, the people have listened, the people own this Yes.”

The three Co-Directors of the Together For Yes campaign have this morning said that dignity and decency have won out, as two key exit polls indicate Ireland has voted to repeal The Eighth Amendment.

Early exit polls released on Friday night from RTÉ and The Irish Times have shown predicted that almost 70% of the Irish public has voted in favour of repealing The Eighth Amendment.

Indeed, images of tally sheets from around the country seem to back up these polls.

Of course, Irish people, never ones to take themselves too seriously all had the same fantastic reaction to the poll.

Ailbhe Smyth, Co-Director of Together for YES said: “This is a vote for dignity and decency. If exit polls are reflected in the official vote count later today, this will be a moment of profound change in Ireland’s social history, a moment when the nation collectively stood up for women and for their healthcare, and voted for constitutional change.

“As the national civil society campaign to repeal the 8th, Together For Yes always knew that Ireland was ready for this change, because of the evidence and facts showing the harm and the pain of the 8th amendment.

“We set about creating a space in which people could discuss abortion in a safe and comfortable way, which recognised this was a difficult, complex and sensitive matter, and that it wasn’t black and white. The people have heard us, the people have listened, the people own this Yes.”

Final results of the referendum are expected around 4pm on Saturday.
