Very bad head lice news for parents of children heading back to school

Carl Kinsella

Can you even say you attended an Irish primary school if you never received a letter home warning your parents about an outbreak of head lice?

For most parents sending their kids back to school this August, head lice will be one of their biggest concerns. Unfortunately, the head lice news is even worse than usual this year.

A two-year study by the Journal of Medical Entomology has revealed that lice are almost immune to treatment, as the chemicals used to fight them are not strong enough.

According to the Kildare Nationalist, Andrew Hennessy of Hair Experts said “What we don’t have in Ireland, and we desperately need, are policies in relation to this in schools, and then proper education.

So it’s kind of a two-stage process: It’s education about lice and how the spread properly – they don’t jump, they don’t hop or fly, so it’s head-to-head contact.”
