Video: Dramatic footage as driver escapes catastrophic Californian wildfire

Terrifying

Tony Cuddihy

This is the stuff of nightmares.

A driver in California drives through some of the worst wildfires to have ever struck the state, with the inferno surrounding his vehicle as he tries to get away.

This was filmed on Saturday night at 8.30pm, with no sign of the fire – which has engulfed 50,000 acres – dying down.

“This fire grew so fast, so large, so rapidly that even with the deployment of immediate resources that were coming, there wasn’t enough resources that could keep up with the spread that was taking place,” Marin County Sheriff’s Lt. Doug Pittman said.

“The resources were directed at structure protection and protection of life.”

One person has reportedly died as a direct result of the fire, with more than 1,000 firemen working on the blaze to little effect.

This lady, clearly shaken after being forced to abandon her home, describes the speed of the inferno to The Press Democrat.
