VIDEO: Dublin school’s ‘Sleep Out’ raises an absolutely staggering amount for the homeless

Tony Cuddihy

To the students, teachers, parents and past pupils of Belvedere College, we say well done.

Every year the students of Belvedere College in Dublin, along with a number of teachers, parents and past pupils, sleep out over two nights at the GPO on O’Connell Street and the Bank of Ireland on College Green in aid of various charities.

This year, the school managed to raise an eye-watering €225,021.61 for the Fr. Peter McVerry Trust, Focus Ireland and HomeAgain.

As this video from Oppermann Productions shows, ‘There are 6,525 people ‘officially homeless’ in Ireland. This figure includes adults and children with their families, the number of families becoming homeless has increased by over 40% since last year and one in three of those in emergency accommodation is under the age of 16th.

‘However, it does not include the ‘hidden homeless’ who are living in squats or ‘sofa surfing’ with friends or people who are living in domestic violence refuges.

‘The aim of the 3 charities supported by #SleepOut16 is to combat this issue that is becoming ever more prevalent in today’s society.’
