10 counties issued with weather warnings by Met Eireann

A rough end to the weekend.

Met Éireann have issued weather warnings to ten counties for Sunday as rain and winds are expected to batter the island.

Over the weekend, four weather warnings have been issued, including one Status Orange and three Status Yellow – two for rainfall and one for wind.

A Status Orange rain warning has been issued for Waterford for intense rainfall forecast over a short period.

Two Status Yellow rain warning have also been issued by the national forecaster. The first, which is in place between 9am and 6pm on Sunday, September 24, includes Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork and Waterford.

A second Status Yellow rain warning has been issued for Donegal, Galway, Mayo and Sligo, which is in place for 11am to 8pm on Sunday, September 24.

The two rain warnings include “spells of heavy rain accompanied by strong and gusty winds at times. Highest rain accumulations on hills and mountains.” Potential impacts from the weather include localised flooding, poor visibility and travel disruption.

A further Status Yellow warning for wind has also been issued for counties Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow, with Met Éireann predicting “very strong and gusty southerly winds, especially near coasts and on high ground.” The warning is in place from 3pm to 7pm on Sunday, September 24.

National forecast

In the national forecast for Sunday, Met Éireann stated the following:

“Turning wet and windy today. Some heavy showers at first before rain moves up from the south during the morning, spreading to all areas, heavy or intense at times, causing localised flooding. The rain will clear northeastwards through the evening with scattered showers following, some of these heavy and possibly thundery. Highest temperatures of 16 to 19 degrees with fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds developing, very strong for a time in the southeast.”

For Sunday night, the forecaster predicts: “Clear spells with scattered showers, turning heavier during the night, especially in the north and west. Temperatures not falling below 11 to 13 degrees in moderate to fresh and gusty southwesterly winds, strong near exposed coasts.”
