Wheatfield Prison responds to the videos after going viral

The Irish Mirror has learned a former inmate is suspected of running the account, which surfaced footage filmed inside the jail: hauls of tablets, cannabis and mobile phones the size of a lighter.

Sources say a prison investigation found the videos, thought to have been filmed around a year ago, were only uploaded after the man was freed last month, meaning he cannot be reprimanded.

In one clip, hundreds of tablets are piled on a tray; in others, cannabis is openly smoked from inside a cell.

Much of the contraband is suspected to have been flown into the prison yard by drone.

Sources say the situation has since improved after a sophisticated new wire mesh was installed over the yard, significantly disrupting the ability to fly contraband inside.

The account, which gives the impression it is posting live from behind bars, is described by sources as an attempt to spread propaganda, even as security at the jail has been tightened.
