"This is what the EU is brilliant at” - Andrew Maxwell on how Brexiteers can never win
"You can see how it's just never going to happen. It's just bladderish you know?"
This week on Ireland Unfiltered, Dion Fanning was joined by Irish comedian Andrew Maxwell. The pair discussed Maxwell's Maserati inspired midlife crisis, growing up the class clown and discovering his love for comedy.
The stand-up comedian was quick to once again express his infamous views on Brexit this week. Speaking to Dion, Maxwell explained the correlation between age and vote in the Brexit referendum and why he feels Brexit is never going to happen.
"Brexit is profoundly demographic. Literally, there's a line from 18-year-olds are the most Remain, the next are 19-year-olds, then 20-year-olds and it just goes up in a line 'till 90-year-olds are 90% leave," he said.
"18 year-olds are 90% Remain in a perfect line. The tipping point is 51. Three years ago it was 45 but in three years it has leapt six years. So you can see how it's just never going to happen. It's just bladderish you know?"
Maxwell, who made headlines for his take on Anglo-Irish relations recently, explained why the EU's greatest gift is their ability to prolong negotiation and why he thinks, at the end of the day, the EU is a big group of... nerds?
"The EU's superpower is kicking shit into long grass and negotiating over a long period of time. Their trade deal with Canada was negotiated over 6 years," he said.
"This is what the EU is brilliant at, you know... it's nerds. Nerdy nerd looking into the detail and just nerding away and going, 'Whatever you say, we're going to come back with a hundred other questions. Have you thought about this? What about hooves? What happens to hooves? We've got a document this big in 20 languages about hooves. What's your policy on hooves?"
