Only six months in, and we’ve had some crackers. Here are the ones you loved the most…
As we are roughly at the halfway point of 2014 we thought it was a good time to look back at the year so far and see what really floated your boat in the world of sport so far. Unsurprisingly, the GAA fares very well indeed so we decided that they deserve a separate article on the biggest stories of 2014 and that will be on its way to you soon.
So, without further ado, here are the biggest non-GAA sports stories of 2014 so far. If you’ve missed any of these, you are in for a treat
Welsh U20 haka
This class video of Welsh U20 player Elliot Dee performing a haka in the New Zealand dressing room during the recent Junior World Cup went super-duper viral (technical term there). Over 20,000 Facebook likes in just 10 days, this video was massively popular on global scale. And well deserved too.
BOD
Ah, the end of the great man’s career provided a lot of great stories but the one that resonated the most was this video put together by adidas to say #ThankYouBOD that hit the net in March.
The story garnered 28,000 Facebook likes and the video, if you haven’t seen it, is just perfect.

Luis Suarez
The gift that keeps on giving and while the first half of the year saw him collect great goals and awards, it was THAT bite against Italy that was huge.
We’d be amazed if you haven’t seen it yet but just in case, here’s the link
Paper airplane at Wembley
Okay, if you haven’t seen this clip from England’s pre-World Cup friendly with Peru, then you’ll wonder what the fuss is about. Just watch it. You won’t regret it.
This paper airplane went further than England at the World Cup. BOOM!
Arsenal players read mean tweets about themselves
Courtesy of our good friends at Paddy Power, this clip of Arsenal players Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Mikel Arteta reading and responding to mean tweets about them was pure gold, gobbling up 26,000 Facebook likes.
Roy Keane and Cristiano Ronaldo
Love both, love one of them, or hate both of them, everyone is interested in Cristiano Ronaldo and Roy Keane. So, when the two men briefly shared a moment after Real Madrid saw of Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final, this snap of the pair proved very popular indeed.
Mike Phillips v Niall Horan
After Mike Phillips had a mini-meltdown during Ireland’s defeat of Wales in this year’s Six Nations, One Direction’s Niall Horan had a jab at him on Twitter. When Phillips eventually got into Twitter the next day, he landed a haymaker in response, with a little help from Rob Kearney.
Bet on the bite
Luis Suarez’s little nibble against Italy was very popular, and profitable, for one Norwegian punter after he backed to Uruguayan to do just that at 175/1.
Andy Lee with the KO of the year
Beaut-i-ful
The most ridiculous penalty of 2014
Gary Neville’s quote of the year on MNF
Monday Night Football is always worth a watch, especially when Gary Neville drops lines like this, concerning the battle between Liverpool and Man City for the title.
