Liam Custer sets new Irish record at European Championships

A new broken record for Irish athletes at the European Championships

The Florida-born athlete won his 400m individual medley heat in 4:22.57, just two hundredths of a second inside the previous Irish record.

Custer, the first Irish athlete in the pool at these championships, shaved the mark set by Jack Cassin in 2023 at the Irish Open in the Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre.

There was more to cheer in the pool, with Rosaline Phelan winning her 100m freestyle heat as part of an Irish 1-2-3 alongside Victoria Catterson and Danielle Farrell, though none advanced to the semi-finals.

Grace Davison clocked 54.72 from a tough outside lane, and Matthew Hamilton went out in the 50m butterfly heats.

Irish supporters will be hoping the rest of Ireland’s European Championships team can build on Custer’s record-breaking start.
