Sharlene Mawdsley has been forced to withdraw from next week’s European Athletics Championships in Birmingham after suffering a hamstring tear, Athletics Ireland has confirmed — a cruel blow to one of Ireland’s leading medal hopes.
The 27-year-old Tipperary woman pulled up during the 200m final at last month’s National Championships in Santry and was later diagnosed with a torn hamstring. It comes as she was in the form of her life, having lowered her 400m personal best on four separate occasions this season to 50.06 seconds. Mawdsley had been due to line up in the individual 400m, where she was ranked sixth in Europe, as well as the 4x400m relay.
I’m so sad to say that I won’t be making the start line at the European Championships next week. We made huge progress after I was diagnosed with a tear in my hamstring, but unfortunately the timing just wasn’t on my side. We’ll keep working hard, and I’m looking forward to getting back on the track later this season. Down, not out.

The withdrawal, first detailed in The42, reshapes the Ireland team travelling to Birmingham, with Rhasidat Adeleke, Sophie Becker, Rachel McCann, Cliodhna Manning and Arlene Crossan named in the relay pool. Mawdsley, who won two medals in Rome in 2024 including mixed 4x400m relay gold, will now target a return later this season after her build-up to the European Championships was cut short.
