China are launching an “artificial moon” that will be brighter than the real one

Rory Cashin

No. This isn’t the set up for a new action movie starring The Rock. This is real life.

The worst part of the Moon is the fact that it is called the Moon.

Other planets have moons and they get to have cool names like Titan or Hyperion or Callisto.

But ours is just called the Moon. We suppose the lack of imagination saved us slightly from Earth simply being called Planet.

Anyways, we digress, because China is planning on launching a new artificial moon over their country, in an attempt to increase night-time illumination, which means less street lights, which means less electricity being used.

The new faux-Moon would cover a 6-to-50-mile wide stretch of the Chengdu region of the country, with light eight times brighter than that of the real moon.

According to the Smithsonian Magazine, “[the] artificial moon will feature a highly reflective coating that reflects the sun’s rays via solar panel-like wings. The angles of these wings can be tweaked in order to create a precise illumination range of several dozen meters.”

It could also be above the city as soon as the year 2020.

Sounds good to us, so all they need to focus on now is giving it a cool name. Any suggestions?
