One giant leap for broadband – the moon officially has faster speeds than parts of Ireland

This one goes out to fans of buffering throughout this lovely country of ours.

The moon can receive broadband speeds of 20Mbps thanks to MIT and NASA, speeds which dwarf the more isolated parts of Ireland.

Both research organisations have broken records, according to Wired, with its new wireless broadband transmission speeds that can receive large amounts of data or seamless streaming of video and audio.

To quote Silicon Republic (because this paragraph makes poor old Uncle Luddite JOE’s head feel a bit woozy), “their laser-powered communication uplink through RF signals was able to achieve the speed of 19.44Mbps download speed, while upload speed came in at 622Mbps which makes it exponentially faster than previous records, 4,800 times faster to be precise.”

While we may be light years away from actually taking Michael O’Leary’s finest on a trip into the great beyond, it’s good to know at least that we’ll have Netflix and Facebook to keep us from having to go out spacewalking.
