Groundskeeper Willie is in to 5/1 with some high-street bookies for the chop next.

Groundskeeper Willie is in to 5/1 with some high-street bookies for the chop next.

While we are all well used to the cut throat world of football management, it seems that the humble groundsman is also now in the firing line.

Today, Crawley Town announced that head groundsman Matt Moss has left the club after the grass-maintenance equivalent of relegation form. Since January 1, five home games have been called off due to an unplayable pitch at the Checkatrade.com Stadium.

In fairness to Moss, Crawley have been slap bang in the middle of the very worst of the weather to hit England this year but the club have decided it is time for a change of mower. As would happen in the managerial world, assistant groundsman Tom Martin steps in, while the local council, who own the ground, will also examine just why the surface is so bad at the stadium.

The Football League have also asked the club to explain why games against Wolves, Stevenage, Tranmere and Carlisle, and an FA Cup replay with Bristol Rovers, were all postponed.

The club say that releasing Moss is a cost-cutting measure.

‘We are having to make cuts across the football club at the moment but we are not short of people who are working on the pitch,’ Chief executive Michael Dunford told The Argus.

‘Tom is only young but we have got some experienced advisers helping him while the borough council have only been too happy to help.’
