According to FIFA, Lionel Messi isn’t even in the top ten players at the World Cup

Didn't they see THAT pass?

Didn’t they see THAT pass?

It’s not like FIFA to get stuff wrong, we know, but we must demand a recount after their own Castrol Index deemed Karim Benzema to be the best player at this summer’s World Cup.

Six shots on target during France’s elimination to Germany, where they lost to Mats Hummels’ first half header, sees Benzema move from third into top spot.

Raphael Varane, out-jumped by Hummels for that goal, is third on the list with James Rodriguez in between.

While there is little doubt that Rodriguez has been the player of the tournament so far, and has caused JOE to sit quietly in a corner since Colombia’s exit, pining, the fact that Messi doesn’t even crack the top ten is a complete.

The Argentine has been his side’s best player, with four goals so far and some top class play to boot, yet FIFA reckon he hasn’t been as good as Stefan de Vrij, to name but one.

Here’s the top ten in full…

  1. Karim Benzema, France (9.79)
  2. James Rodriguez, Colombia (9.74)
  3. Raphael Varane, France (9.66)
  4. Thiago Silva, Brazil (9.66)
  5. Mats Hummels, Germany (9.63)
  6. Arjen Robben, Holland (9.59)
  7. David Luiz, Brazil (9.56)
  8. Neymar, Brazil (9.53)
  9. Stefan de Vrij, Holland (9.51)
  10. Jan Vertonghen (9.48)
