Chris Hughton is set to make an emergency loan offer for Irish goalkeeper Shay Given, according to reports in the Sunday World.
Newcastle number one Steve Harper has been ruled out for three months, following an injury he picked up in Newcastle's 1-0 away victory against Everton.
Currently in goal for the Magpies is 22-year-old Dutchman Tim Krul, and only have 20-year-old Ole Söderberg as back-up.
Chris Hughton is hoping that the Premier League will grant Newcastle a special dispensation, and will seek to use Manchester City's loan signing of Marton Fulop last season as a precedent.
The one stumbling block might be Newcastle's Fraser Forster, who is currently on loan to Celtic.
Unlike Joe Hart, last season, the Englishman has a recall-clause in his contract, and the Premier League could insist that Newcastle activate that rather than signing a goalkeeper from another club.
If Forster is recalled, Celtic could attempt to sign Given themselves, and Neil Lennon has shown an interest.
