As science week looms ever closer the people of Dublin and the Rubber Bandits were asked if chemistry is important in their every day lives.

When you make your cup of coffee in the morning do you ever wonder why your milk mixes into the coffee but can’t be separated? When you spray deodorant all over yourself, do you stop to wonder what it is that is stopping you smell worse then Michelle McManus’ thong? Well, it’s all chemistry.

Discover Science & Engineering filmed on a Dublin street this month and asked the general public, and the Rubber Bandits, the tough question, “Is chemistry important in our everyday lives?” To some it is, to others it isn’t and then there are the other people who don’t know an electron from a proton.

Our favourite response has to be the young lad with the red hair at 1.36. When asked if chemistry is important in his life he replied, “Well I mean, I wouldn’t be thinking about it. I know it’s important, kind of, as a thing.” To which his friend agrees with, “Yea” followed by a wry smile.

As for the Bandits, well, have a look at the video and see if you agree with them about chemistry being important.
