Classic Lions Moment – Brian O’Driscoll’s try v Australia 2001

The great man is over there right now, and still scoring tries, but this effort from a dozen years ago remains an iconic Lions moment.

Brisbane was the scene of the first Lions Test v Australia on the 2001 Tour. At a packed Gabba, Lions fans outnumbered the home support and the visitors went on to record an emphatic 29-13 win. The tourists ran in four tries that magic night in Queensland and while Jason Robinson’s opener was pretty good, the one that lives on in the memory is BOD’s. Leading 12-3 at the break, O’Driscoll’s try helped put the Lions out of sight and killed the Test as a contest. Following a great take from a restart and some tasty passing, scrambling and mauling, Bod received a pass from Jonny Wilkinson around halfway. The then 23-year-old centre still had a lot to do but a brilliant injection of pace, and a deft sidestep, left the defence, and especially poor old Nathan Grey, floundering.
