With proven US citizen Barack Obama riding high in the polls following his audacious bin Laden assassination, Celebrity Apprentice host Donald Trump has dropped his presidential hopes.
Until two weeks ago business and reality TV mogul Trump had been a front-runner for the Republican nomination for their 2012 US presidential candidate, winning partisan plaudits for his dogged pursuit of the ‘birther’ issue – the question of whether or not President Barack Obama had actually been born in the US.
One issued long-form birth certificate later and non-stop digs at his leadership credentials from Obama and Saturday Night Live cast member Seth Meyers later, Trump has now decided that enough is enough and has dropped out of the 2012 presidential race.
The business magnate's decision is unsurprising in the face of the latest Public Policy Polling numbers, which showed that support for Trump as President has dwindled to 8% for Repubicans, down from a high of 26% only a month ago.
Unsurprisingly, Trump's announcement contained no traces of humility, as he stated that, "This decision does not come easily or without regret; especially when my potential candidacy continues to be validated by ranking at the top of the Republican contenders in polls across the country."
Trump did not mention whether or not he would officially announce his endorse a candidate in the rapidly-dwindling search for a contender to stand against Obama in the November 2012 elections.
Previous front-runner Mike Huckabee surprised his supporters on Sunday night by announcing that he would not pursue an election bid either, leaving the race open to the top three hopefuls of House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Massachussetts Governor Mitt Romney and former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty.
