A drunk Norwegian tourist managed to curl up and fall asleep on a baggage belt at Italy’s busiest airport. It then took him for a little spin…

You probably wouldn’t expect to see the outline of a man popping up on the X-ray machine at an airport, but that’s exactly what happened at Rome’s Fiumicino airport recently. Apparently, the unnamed man in question was spotted walking into the airport with a backpack and a can of beer in his hand. He then made his way over to his check-in desk only to find no one was on duty.

Instead of standing around and waiting like everyone else, the Norwegian decided to jump across the counter so that he could have a snooze on the conveyor belt with his bag, and probably his beer, beside him.

For some reason, the baggage belt started up and took the man on a 15 minute, 160-foot journey through a maze of conveyor belts before the alarm was raised. He was only noticed after security workers spotted something strange on one of their X-ray monitors… that being the outline of a human in the foetal position.

When police woke the drunken man (which they had trouble doing, apparently) he didn’t even realise what had just happened. They took him to the hospital as a safety precaution after the man was subjected to the X-rays without any protection.

According to one Italian official, “There’s usually an episode like this once a year…” Airport staff say this incident doesn’t expose any security flaws in their system. We think a few people will beg to differ.
