Enda gets earful from angry locals in Westmeath

Enda learned that the voter always has the last word when he was doing a spot of campaigning for the EU fiscal Treaty in Athlone today.

The Taoiseach and his handlers are usually pretty good at brushing off people who don’t fully agree with Government policies. But today they couldn’t manage that today with the barrage of confrontations.

Most were concerned about the sceptic tank charges and the household charge and weren’t afraid to give Enda a piece of their mind.

The exchanges all initially began in a very mild mannered way but quickly took an angry vent. Kenny tried every trick in the book to fob the protestors off, but they weren’t having any of it.

One angry local man told Enda: “I am one of the people who have not paid the h charge, i’m telling you personally. Whether you tell me that I’m breaking the law or not, I don’t mind. Because I paid €60,000 in taxes when I came back here.

“I invested my money that I earned in England where I was forced to go to earn my living, I came back and I invested in my country. Now you want me to pay to live in my own home – well shame on you Mr Kenny.”

Many others people shouted abuse at the Taoiseach while he did a walkabout in the Golden Island Shopping Centre in the town.

The Taoiseach later told RTÉ: “Issues over the charges can be debated and resolved at home, but Ireland’s future depends on a Yes vote in the referendum.”
