This Christmas Hollywood heavyweights Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are to team up legendary Belgian sleuth Tintin to the silver screen. Here's the first poster.

Titled The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn, this Christmas' biggest release finds Spielberg on directorial duties and The Hobbit director Jackson taking on a producer role.

Similar to the film-making first brought to light in Robert Zemeckis' 2004 The Polar Express release, Tintin's actors motion-captured their entire performances for the film adaptation.

Billy Elliot star Jamie Bell taking on the role of Tintin and frequent Jackson collaborator Andy Serkis (Lord of the Ring's Gollum) taking on the iconic role of the foul-humoured Captain Haddock, while Simon Pegg and Nick Frost play bumbling identical twins Thompson and Thompson.

Intended as a trilogy, if the first motion-captured 3D Tintin installment goes well, Jackson and Spielberg will swap duties for a sequel and combine to co-direct a third feature. Attack The Block writer and director Joe Cornish is the screenwriter tasked with ensuring that Hergé's script is three-dimensional, in addition to its post-production display.

The official release date for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn is currently December 23 and we'll be sure to post the first trailer once it becomes available.
