It still wouldn’t have grabbed the attention away from Luis Suarez but this would have been a ridiculous goal had it gone in.
It would have taken something truly astounding to have anyone talking about anything but Luis Suarez’s sensational four-goal haul at Anfield last night, but Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard very nearly managed it.
Thanks to Suarez’s three first-half goals (see the pick of a ridiculously good bunch here and his fourth from a free-kick here) the Reds had the cigars out in the second half against Norwich at Anfield last night and on a night of unbelievable goals, Gerrard was very close to getting in on the act.
The Liverpool skipper had his back to goal when he acrobatically flicked Philippe Coutinho’s chipped through ball towards goal with his left foot, but with John Ruddy beaten all ends up, the ball agonisingly rebounded off the post and Norwich were let off the hook and Gerrard could do little but smile at his misfortune afterwards.
After all, thanks to some Uruguayan fella, the points had been well wrapped up at that stage.
