Hola Amigos! Each week JOE and Corona are teaming up to tell you what we find most fantastico about the wonderfully exotic Mexico.

‘Fantastico’ is how they say ‘fantastic’ over there by the way. Probably.

It’s all in association with the good people at Corona who are giving away a VIP trip for two to Mexico. To be in with a chance to win, just visit the Corona Facebook page here.

So gringos, here are our top 5 favourite Mexican drinks to help you celebrate Drinko de Mayo

Tequila – we don’t really need to tell you all about tequila do we? Of course you know it… although you may not remember it. An incredibly popular drink the world over, this little Mexican firecracker is especially delicious when accompanied by Sangrita (‘little blood’), a non-alcoholic drink designed to perfectly complement the tequila’s acidity.

Margarita – not the pizza (although JOE did drink one of those back in our student days but there’s no need to bring that up now). We’re talking about the lovely tequila-based cocktail that’s mixed with an orange-flavoured liqeour and some lemon or lime juice. And whatever you do, don’t forget the sweet salty goodness encrusted around the glass rim.

Agua de Horchata – although the drink originated in Spain, the Mexicans have adopted and developed this into one of their own most tasty beverages. A Mexican Horchata, traditionally drunk to counter-act the spiciness of your main Mexican meal, is made with rice, sometimes with vanilla and almost always with cinnamon. So essentially it’s cinnamon-scented rice milk. Mmmmmmmm.

Watermelon Aguas Frescas – so simple and so effective. This name literally translates as ‘Fresh Waters’  and is traditionally sold at the side of Mexican roads. A great idea we’ll think you’ll agree and, with our very own Irish heat wave on its way next week, now’s the perfect time to set up that little stall you’ve always been thinking about – they’d go perfectly with some Wexford strawberries.

Corona – and of course, no list of tasty Mexican drinks would be complete without one of the country’s most iconic and popular cervezas (that means ‘beer’ you plebs). A delicious drink, especially with a little slice of fresh lime just to give it that extra Mexican kick.  It’s absolutely refreshing and again, with the longer evenings and the sun popping his head in for a visit, there’s no better accompanying beverage to while away the evenings chatting with friends.
