ICYMI: Brilliant picture of Sligo’s Anthony Elding from yesterday’s FAI Cup semi-final

If they ever remake ‘300’ using League of Ireland players, the Rovers striker is a shoo-in.

Yesterday’s FAI Cup semi-finals were pretty entertaining. In the Louth derby, Drogheda beat Dundalk 1-0 but that doesn’t even tell half the story of that game. Dundalk boss Stephen Kenny was deeply unhappy with referee Anthony Buttimer after he dismissed two Dundalk players and awarded a penalty that ultimately decided the game. His post match comments, in which he called the game a ‘farce’ will surely lead to action from the FAI.

The other semi, the meeting between Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers was not quite so controversial, but it did feature one of the sports pictures of the year.

With the score at 2-0, Sligo introduced Anthony Elding for the final few minutes and the big fella delivered, scoring within minutes of coming on the kill off the game. And boy did he love scoring the goal, taking off his shirt to do his best Mario Balotelli impersonation.

Class, and terrifying, all at the same time…
