The recent Seville derby saw a few players put in some very good performances, but there may have been a motivating factor behind their upturn in form: free beer

If you happened to catch the Seville derby (unfortunately one of the last games in charge for Pepe Mel of Real Betis) then you might have noticed that a good few of the players put in some of their best performances of the season.

However, it seems that they weren’t only motivated by the desire to beat their local rivals, but also by the sweetest prize in all the land: winning their weight in beer.

The two lucky lads who were named their side’s best player were Ivan Rakitic of Sevilla and Alvaro Vadillo of Betis, who won 80 litres and 70 litres respectively.

Cruzcampo, the official beer suppliers of Sevilla F.C. organised the event and the voting for the best player was done via Twitter using the hashtag #juegaelDerbi. Rakitic noted that it was a pretty great prize, and that he’s sure a few of his team mates will also enjoy sharing the prize over a decent meal. On an unrelated note, Rakitic is now injured for the next two games, but that sounds awful convenient to us
