Match of the Day revamp sees Mark Lawrenson sidelined

Lawro’s not gone completely, but you will be seeing less of him next season on the football highlights show.

A little less Mark Lawrenson, a bit more Robbie Savage and the return of Peter Schmeichel is what faces football fans on the lookout for highlights this season.

With Premier Soccer Saturday biting the dust, most of us will have to watch Match of the Day if they want to see the weekend’s action, on TV at least.

And that means lots of Gary Lineker and Alan Hansen, but a bit less Mark Lawrenson this year. The BBC released a statement today about the new run of Match of the Day and the former Irish international’s name was nowhere to be seen.

The Beeb quickly rectified the mistake, issuing a new statement where they said the 56-year-old would have a ‘reduced role’ this season.

As well as Lawrenson we will be treated to a rotating cast of pundits alongside Hansen and Alan Shearer. Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand, Gus Poyet, Robbie Savage and Gianluca Vialli will all be on the sofa while Peter Schmeichel is back seven years after getting the chop for being, well, a little dull.
