A bill has been passed in the Northern Ireland Assembly that states any pub that serves under-age drinkers twice will be shut down.
The bill, set to be introduced in September, will mean that clubs, hotels and pubs convicted of selling alcohol to under-age customers are to be given five or six penalty points. 10 penalty points is enough for a closure of premises between a week to three months.
Social Development Minister Alex Attwood spoke of his effort to curb young alcoholism by stating: "I have no issue with the sensible consumption of alcohol.
"My issue is with the misuse of alcohol, and its effect on health and crime. Selling drink to people below 18 is wrong and reckless - I welcome the Assembly supporting me in premises being automatically closed for a significant period if they do this more than once.
The measures were included in the amended Licensing and Registration of Clubs Bill.
