Ending an 11-year drought, Wexford won the Leinster Under 21 title in very dramatic fashion in Wexford Park this evening. This picture tells you what it meant.

Nobody gave Wexford much of a chance to beat Kilkenny in the Leinster U21 Hurling final at Wexford Park tonight. Priced at 3/1, the home side were supposed to do what almost all Wexford teams at all levels are expected to do these days against Kilkenny; lose.

But an inspirational performance, led by senior stars like Lee Chin and Jack Guiney, saw the home side keep pace with the Cats all the way and a late Guiney free tied it up and sent it to extra-time.

In boiling hot conditions in Wexford, both sides tired in the bonus periods and that may explain the bizarre conclusion to the game. Kilkenny had come from two points down at half-time of extra time to have it level going into injury time when a half-chance for Wexford near the Kilkenny goal was somehow bundled across the line. It looked like it was an own goal on the replays but as you can see below, Conor McDonald didn’t care.
