Considering how bad this year’s Series was it won’t be hard but GAA director general Paraic Duffy has promised that the 2013 International Rules games will be better.
Duffy had a long meeting with his AFL counterpart Andrew Demetriou after the second pummeling dished out by Ireland on Friday and after a few cups of coffee to wake them up they decided to continue with the Series.
“We want to ensure that this next series will be an outstanding success and there is no reason why it should not be,” Duffy told the Belfast Telegraph. “Andrew Demetriou is adamant that the Australian players want to participate in it. We have agreed that we are going to play it on a two-year cycle again.”
We don’t know about you but we have yet to meet anyone who really enjoys the games and while the players involved do seem genuinely in favour of the Series continuing, is it worth the hassle to disrupt our club championships for these events?
Duffy attempted to address that point too. “Obviously a lot of players who were selected found themselves in demand by their club and country at one and the same time and this is not a desirable situation. I think this is something we should be seeking to avoid in the future,” he said.
That would be one improvement but it seems nigh on impossible to achieve as the GAA calendar is already overcrowded. The absence of the biggest names in AFL from the Aussie team hit attendances but forcing them to pick their stars is hardly going to happen either.
Perhaps the biggest thing the 2013 Series has in its favour is that by the time it rolls around should have forgotten the dullness of the one we just witnessed.
