According to a graphic featured in today’s Irish Independent, Robbie Keane isn’t Ireland’s all-time leading goalscorer, Darron Gibson is, and by some distance too.
Following on from the announcement of the Irish squad to face Serbia in a friendly in Belgrade next month, the Indo published a graphic featuring all the names included in the squad, the number of caps they have earned and the number of goals scored in their international careers to date.
It came as a surprise then to see that, according to the graphic, Everton midfielder Darron Gibson has made only one appearance for Ireland, yet has somehow managed to score 91 goals in the process. What a debut that would have been!

Gibson's goal tally is nearly three times that of the rest of the squad put together
As we always say when pointing out typos we find elsewhere in the media, we are in no way immune to the odd grammatical error or three at JOE Towers, so we're not adopting a holier-than-thou mentality, we just don’t mind pointing out occasional mistakes when, such as in this instance, they have hilarious consequences.
Gibson, if you didn’t know, has made 19 appearances for Ireland and has scored just the one goal, a belter against Wales in the Carling Nations Cup last year.
Now, if they were talking about the amount of shots he has had that flew wildly over the bar, the 91 figure might be a little closer to the truth.
A big hat-tip to Eoghan Hickey for sending us in the pic.
