Twenty five years ago today 96 football fans went to a game and never came home. Today’s Liverpool Echo captures that sadness with a moving front cover.

Today is a sad day for all football fans. Whether you were around to remember the Hillsborough disaster or have only read about it in the years since, all fans should be able to identify with the tragedy. We have all gone to countless games and to imagine that 96 people would go to watch a match and be killed is so appaling that even a quarter of a century on, it is still hard to comprehend.

That, plus the ongoing campaign by the families to find out exactly what happened that fateful day in Sheffield means that Hillsborough continues to resonate, especially in Liverpool.

The city’s local paper, the Liverpool Echo, devotes their entire front page to the anniversary today and it is as powerful and moving a newspaper page as you’ll ever see.
