There must be a few Premier League teams wondering how they managed to pull this one off

In general, Brazilian teams often have trouble getting fans in the door for a variety of reasons. One major contributing factor is the sheer number of games in a system where there are cups, leagues and regional championships as well as the Copa Libertadores and Copa Total Sudamericana, which can lead to a sense of footballing fatigue amongst fans who are not too pushed seeing their team play a regional rival from two divisions down. That, and the price of the tickets has risen astronomically in the past few years too.

That doesn’t seem to be a problem for Santa Cruz Futebol Clube, a club from Recife who are known for their fanatical support, and their fanbase really outdid themselves yesterday in the Estadio do Arruda, where around 60,000 packed in to see their side get promoted to the second tier of Brazilian football.

Flavio Caca-Rato, whose surname translates as “Rat Catcher”, was the man who got the all important goal just three minutes before the final whistle, according to Yahoo! Sports, and their fans will be hoping the team stays on the up and up, having sunk as low as the fourth division in 2008.
