The impending introduction of Hawkeye technology in Croke Park has been the source of much conversation in GAA circles and tonight we got a glimpse of what it will look like at headquarters.
Hawkeye, which is already well known through its use in tennis and cricket, will soon remove ambiguity over points scored in Croke Park, thereby relieving the pressure on umpires in cases where there is uncertainty over whether a ball did in fact go over the bar or not.
The system, which incorporates six cameras – four located in the stands and one behind each goal – has been trialled at headquarters before and it was the subject of another experiment this evening in a game involving Round Towers of Clondalkin.
Thanks to this picture by Colin Nugent, which we got our hands through John Fogarty of the Irish Examiner, we got a glimpse of what GAA fans can expect to see on the big screen later this summer. Fair play, by the way, to whoever kicked this one, it looks a helluva point.

While there will be some who will lament the reduction in responsibilities of the lovable traditional GAA umpire, Hawkeye will certainly help to create an extra amongst the crowd in Croke Park and ensure that incidents like this one, at headquarters, at least, will become a thing of the past.
