In the day’s other games at the Rugby World Cup, Argentina edged out Scotland in Pool B and Samoa won the battle of the Pacific Islands in Pool D.
Results:
Argentina 13-12 Scotland
Ireland 62-12 Russia
Samoa 27-7 Fiji
Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino’s try proved to be the difference in what was an epic encounter between Argentina and Scotland in Pool B.
Both sides were battling it out for the likely runners-up spot in the pool and it was no surprise that it wasn’t decided until the death, when a late Dan Parks drop goal effort flew wide despite the fact that Felipe Contepomi and others were miles offside.
Parks had earlier put Scotland six points in front with a drop goal after coming on as a replacement for Ruaridh Jackson, who had shared nine points with Chris Paterson earlier in the game.
Contepomi added to Amorosino’s try with eight points from the boot to secure a win that all but assures the Pumas of the runners-up spot in Group B, unless Scotland can cause an upset against England in the final pool game next weekend.
In Pool D, the Pacific Island battle between Fiji and Samoa failed to live up to expectations as Fiji came away with a comfortable win in Auckland.
Tusi Pisi kicked four penalties to give Samoa a 12-0 half-time lead and the game was as good as over when Kahn Fotuali'I crossed for the first try of the game after the break.
Netani Edward Talei gave Fiji a brief glimpse of hope with a try shortly after, but George Stowers scored Samoa’s second try of the match to secure what was a comfortable and deserved victory.
