First Robbie Keane and now Shay Given; all these injury scares surrounding our key players so close to the Euros isn’t good for the heart.
The Aston Villa ‘keeper suffered a knee injury at training in Malahide yesterday and didn’t finish training as a result, although a subsequent scan on the problem delivered a positive update.
There was believed to be a fair degree of concern when the injury happened initially, but according to a report in the Irish Independent this morning, the FAI have said that it is a knock which will cause Given to miss a couple of days training and no more. Thank heavens for that.
As a result of the knock, Ireland’s most capped player might miss out on the friendly game with Bosnia at the weekend, but will almost certainly be back between the sticks for the friendly with Hungary on 4 June and the opening game of the Euros against Croatia six days later.
We can only hope that the FAI are being true to their word and there is no attempt to disguise the nature of Given’s injury because we can ill afford to be without someone of his stature going into our first major tournament in ten years.
Given is one of the few members of the squad to have experienced a major tournament in the past and although Kieren Westwood and David Forde are decent back-up options, neither has much international experience to call on.
Interestingly, it is not only Given’s fitness that it being questioned this morning but his future at club level, with reports suggesting that Mark Hughes is keen to sign him for QPR in the summer.
Hughes was the man who brought Given to Manchester City from Newcastle United in 2009 and has reportedly targeted Given as the man to replace former Irish international Paddy Kenny, who is expected to leave the club in the summer despite a decent season, including some heroics in the final game against City at the Etihad.
Given only signed for Aston Villa last summer, but Hughes is hoping that the uncertainty surrounding the club, who have yet to appoint a new manager, will convince Given to move to London.
We’re sure Shay will forget about all that for now and just concentrate on getting himself right for the Euros. Considering the opposition we’re going up against, we’ve a feeling he’ll be a very busy man throughout the tournament.
