Tahiti introduce losing point in league system so players are ‘never sad’

It takes a losing bonus point to a whole new level as the Tahitian FA look to give losing teams a lift.

It takes a losing bonus point to a whole new level as the Tahitian FA look to give losing teams a lift.

Tahiti proved at the Confederations Cup this year that football may not be their number one sport, but the country’s FA have taken steps to ensure the morale of their players never dips too low.

After conceding 24 goals in just three games during the summer tournament, you would be forgiven for thinking that their internationals might be feeling a little deflated, though they appeared happy enough to be a part of the festival of football.

Now it seems the Tahitian FA has decided to alter its points system for the domestic game and award a point for every team in defeat. A win will earn a team four points and a draw two points and their FA director Charles Ariiotima explained the points changes to ESPN Brasil.

“We just don’t want anyone to be sad. With this system, even if a team loses every game, they won’t be on zero points at the end of the season,” he said.

“Football, first of all is joy.”

Well there would be little joy in losing every game, though as the adage goes, there is no sentiment in sport. Except in Tahiti of course.
