Louis Tomlinson of One Direction signing for Doncaster was the source of plenty of shock and excitement today, but the best thing about the whole episode was the brilliant reaction of former Irish manager Mick McCarthy.

Doncaster’s signature of local lad turned pop superstar Louis Tomlinson would have been cause for as much concern amongst Doncaster fans worried that it was actually true as it was for One Direction fans worried that he might be about to leave the band for good.

Fortunately for both parties it turns out that he is simply hoping to appear for Doncaster Rovers at some point this season in order to raise money for the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

As a PR stunt it certainly did its job in terms of attracting publicity for the club and for the charity but it also spawned a quite brilliant reaction from former Ireland manager and current Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy, who had the following exchange with a Sky Sports News reporter when quizzed about it earlier today.

Sky Sports News presenter: “If you could sign a singer, who would it be and why?”

Big Mick: “Well it won’t be a geezer from One Direction, I can assure you of that. It’ll be Rihanna or Beyonce or somebody like that. At least we can guarantee some talent in the team over the winter, and something to look at as well for us old fellas.”

Classic Mick and almost as good as possibly his finest moment and one of JOE’s all-time favourite clips…
