Transfer Talk: A new left back for Manchester United, Modric to Chelsea and Lukaku to Spurs

The list of players linked to Manchester United is now well into triple figures.

The list of players linked to Manchester United is now well into triple figures.

In the always muddled world of transfer rumours, only one thing has remained constant this summer and that is the linking of players with a connection to Louis van Gaal to a move to Manchester United.

It is understandable, of course, and the likelihood is that when the Dutch man does take the reins at Old Trafford, he’ll bring in one or two players he knows from some of his previous gigs. However, if he brought in all the players he is supposed to according to the papers, United’s squad wouldn’t fit in the Stretford End.

Today shows no let up in the theme, with Dutch left back Daley Blind the latest to be linked with a move to the Red Devils. The Mirror say that the Ajax defender is being eyed up by United, with a fee of £12m being mentioned. Purely for the headline fun to be had with his name, we really hope this rumour is actually true.

In the Mail, the LVG theme continues as they say that Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinsteiger are Old Trafford targets, a tale we have heard numerous times already this summer. Maybe if it is repeated often enough, it will eventually happen.

Away from the potential comings and goings at United, Chelsea are the other big movers on today’s back pages. With Cesc Fabregas already in the bag, and Diego Costa also lurking like a rogue item in the bagging area, another big name is in Jose’s sights.

The Star are saying that Luka Modric could be off to Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea also fancy nabbing defender Raphael Varane from Real Madrid too. Best of luck with that Jose.

It seems Romelu Lukaku is still surplus to requirements at Chelsea and the Sunday Mirror reckon that he could be off to Spurs to lead Mauricio Pochettino’s line while the Sunday People say that Liverpool are in pursuit of Benfica winger Lazar Markovic. If that £25m deal goes through, Nani will be off to Portugal to replace him.

In much less sexy news, Hull are trying to prise Robert Snodgrass from Norwich (People), West Ham are after Ecuadorian winger Jefferson Montero (People) and Fulham fancy taking Ross McCormack from Leeds (Mirror).

Finally, in a rumour madder than the ‘Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank to be new Hibs manager’ rumour, the Star say that Monaco are interested in bringing Adam Johnson from Sunderland to Ligue 1.
