Like an unpleasant heat rash, our transfer wrap-up is back for the summer and it kicks off with more Gunners news than an NRA newsletter.
And so it begins. Yes for the next four months we will bring you all the best and worst of the daily transfer rumours that have sprung up overnight. Most, we’ll admit, will be nonsense, but entertaining nonsense none the less and if you are really lucky, one or two of the actual deals mentioned may even go through.
Anyway, to kick off Summer Transfer Window 2014 we have a bit of an Arsenal special. Following a season that started brightly, dipped alarmingly before seemingly ending quite pleasantly, they are the main source of today’s gossip.
It starts with Loic Remy. The QPR man spent the season on loan at Newcastle but is expected to be sold by the Londoners this summer. He is unlikely to remain with the Magpies and it seems he could be Arsenal bound. The Frenchman was spotted at the Emirates for Arsenal’s game against West Brom but Arsene Wenger claimed he didn’t know he was there. Still, the Mail reckon his appearance there will ‘fuel rumours’ of a move, which they then fuel with rumours of a move.
But Remy is not the only name linked with Arsenal today. The BBC report that CaughtOffside have a list of players that Wenger wants to blow £40m on. The trio named are Micah Richards, Wilfried Bony and Morgan Schneiderlin. Depending on your opinion of Wenger these are
- Exactly the sort of proven Premier League players needed to fill out a very shallow squad
- Second-tier signings that show that cheaper options are the Wenger way
- WHY DOESN’T HE BUY RONALDO #WengerOut
You would think that is all the Arsenal news but like chocolate flavoured yoghurt, you’re wrong. The Metro carry the news that Wenger is likely to stay after his post-match comments comments yesterday and they also suggest that he might just be able to persuade Bacary Sagna to hang about too.
Finally on the Arsenal front, The Sun says that Reading keeper Alex McCarthy could be on his way to the Gunners, to fill the gap left by Lukas Fabianski’s imminent departure.
Away from the Emirates news is a bit thin. The Sun reckon that Joleon Lescott may stay in the Premier League rather than move to Turkey, The Mirror say that Nice’s Timothee Kolodziejczak will be heading to Southampton to replace Luke Shaw and Liverpool and Spurs are ‘battling it out’ for 21-year-old Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi, according to The Star.
Finally, in ‘if you’re going to start off the transfer season with a mad rumour you might as well go all out’ news, Spanish paper AS reckon Lionel Messi will be the subject of a £164m bid from Manchester City this summer.
Yep, it could be a long summer folks…
