Atlanta Braves star Jason Heyward set to have surgery on his jaw after taking a fierce ball to the face yesterday.

Firstly, we think it is pretty clear that New York Mets pitcher Jonathon Niese didn’t intend to hit Jason Heyward with this pitch. That might be some small consolation to the Braves star this morning as he wakes up with a fractured jaw and a date with a surgeon.

In the sixth inning, a slightly off target pitch by Niese caught Heyward under the ear flap and right on the jaw. Heyward went down straight away and while he would eventually walk off the field under his own steam, he was spitting blood.

Reports overnight confirmed that his right jaw was fractured in the incident and Atlanta confirmed he will undergo surgery on the injury today.

Heyward will be out of action for up to six weeks.
