Not one for the squeamish this…

Madrid’s big two went head to head in the second leg of the Copa del Rey this evening and as you might expect from such a heated rivalry, things got a bit hot under the collar at the Vicente Calderón stadium.

Having put Real Madrid two the good and out of sight on aggregate (5-0), with two spot-kicks, Ronaldo was then booked for a robust aerial challenge on Atleti’s Javier Manquillo, who fell head first to the turf and suffered a horrible landing with his neck bearing the brunt of the damage.

Manquillo has since been taken to hospital having suffered a cervical sprain and will hopefully recover before long, while Ronaldo himself was also in the wars having been hit with a lighter thrown from the crowd on his way off at half-time, an incident which provoked a reaction of varying extremes from Sergio Ramos…

Not the sort of scenes you want to see in a game of such importance and hopefully there’ll be no repeat when they meet again in the league early next month.
