Has this ever actually worked?

It’s been a long time, eight years in fact, since Thierry Henry and Robert Pires made a balls of a cheeky penalty routine against Manchester City but a fourth division side in Austria have ensured that everyone will be talking about it yet again and yet again for all the wrong reasons.

Two players from Austrian fourth division side Stadl-Paura (what do you mean you’ve never heard of them?) attempted to re-enact the Henry/Pires routine during a 5-1 trouncing of SK Altheim at the weekend and they ended up doing a pretty good job by arguably making an even worse job of it than the ex-Arsenal duo.

To answer our own question at the top of the page – yes we deliberately set this up to make ourselves look smart – this routine has been successfully been pulled off, by the legendary Johann Cruyff and Jesper Olsen for Ajax in 1982 and by Belgian duo Rik Coppens and André Piters for Belgium in 1957.

We still reckon that the Austrian lads won’t be the last to try it, however, and they probably won’t be the last to make a bo**ox of it either.
