DIT caused something of a shock by halting DCU’s bid for back to back Sigerson Cup titles in Athlone today. This opportunistic effort by substitute Bernard Allen proved crucial in the finish.
Given the talent at their disposal, the form of Michael Murphy and the fact that they were in the hunt for their second title on the trot, DCU were strongly fancied to overcome the challenge of DIT today in the Sigerson Cup semi-final in Athlone IT.
Instead, they ended up losing out by five points to DIT, who could count Mayo duo Aidan O’Shea and Jason Doherty, Kildare’s Tomas O’Connor and Kerry’s Darran O’Sullivan in their ranks, while Meath’s Bryan Menton was handed the unenviable task of keeping Michael Murphy quiet.
While DIT had the edge for most of the encounter, a second half goal by substitute Bernard Allen proved vital in stretching their advantage, with Allen pouncing opportunistically with a soccer-style effort after a promising DIT move came to a halt just outside the DCU penalty area (see video above).
A great win for DIT then, but they’ll have no time to get carried away with it as they will face UCC in tomorrow's final after the Cork college overcame the challenge of hosts Athlone IT in the second game this afternoon.
