Video: Celtic newboy Virgil van Dijk looks pretty handy

JOE

Based on this YouTube compilation (we know, we know) Celtic’s latest recruit looks a bit of a player.

Celtic’s ability to find value in the transfer market is a real asset to the Glasgow giant. Okay, they have the lure of virtually guaranteed Champions League football every year, and a great name and history, but it is still impressive that they can get such bargains. Last summer they nabbed Fraser Forster for just £2m and the summer before they captured Victor Wanyama from a Belgian club for £900,000. The Kenyan will probably be sold for over 10 times that this summer.

It’s too early to say if Dutch Under 21 player Virgil van Dijk will be of the same calibre but based on this YouTube video, he certainly looks the part.

The tall centre-half arrives at Celtic Park for a fee of £2.5m from Dutch side FC Groningen. He looks very good on the ball, is a big lad (6’4”) who can pose a threat at set-pieces and he displays a very nice shot on him too in this clip.

Ajax boss Frank de Boer is quoted in the Scottish press saying: “Virgil van Dijk has all the qualities of a central defender. He’s big, strong and has footballing ability. He’s one to keep an eye on.”

Frank knows a bit about defending so if he rates the youngster that’s good enough for us.
