Video: Denver Broncos linebacker learns about the folly of premature celebration the hard way

He isn’t the first sportsman guilty of this offence and he certainly won’t be the last.

He isn’t the first sportsman guilty of this offence and he certainly won’t be the last.

To the delight of American Football fans around the world, including those on these shores willing to wait up through the night, the NFL returned last night.

We’re looking forward to a season full of brilliant touchdowns, big hits and admirable feats of athleticism over the next six months or so, but also to regular examples of the kind of unfortunate but hilarious mistake that Denver Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan made against the Baltimore Ravens last night.

Intercepting a Joe Flacco pass in the fourth quarter, Trevathan ran unimpeded towards the end zone and when he realised he was going to score, he began to celebrate, seemingly unaware of the fact that he had dropped the ball just before he crossed the line.

Denver had a comfortable lead at the time so Trevathan’s actions didn’t have too much of an effect on the overall outcome, although the Ravens did manage to score a touchdown almost immediately after.

Worse still, Trevathan’s fellow linebacker Wesley Woodyard was injured as a result of trying to prevent the ball from going out of bounds after Trevathan dropped it.

What an eejit.
