Because it’s Juan Roman Riquelme, we’re inclined to think he did...

The gifted Argentinean playmaker scored a cracker for Boca Juniors against Corinthians in the Copa Libertadores clash between the sides last night, but if it was any mere mortal responsible for the goal, sceptical football fans would be inclined to question whether it was in fact a cross rather than a shot.

Because it’s Riquelme, however, we’re pretty sure that he spotted the ‘keeper slightly off his line from wide on the right wing before curling a rasper of a shot over his head and into the far corner and the wry smile on his face afterwards would seem to suggest he knew well what he was doing.

While Riquelme was busy scoring a golazo, another household South American name, Alexandre Pato, was guilty of one of the worst misses of the season with the game delicately poised at a goal apiece, a miss that proved crucial in the end as Boca progressed 2-1 on aggregate.

It seemed easier for Pato to score rather than miss but instead he approached the opportunity with about as much gracefulness as a duck (Pato’s nickname), fell over himself and watched as the ball trickled harmlessly wide.

Now, he definitely didn’t mean to do that.
