Video: Did you see Javier Mascherano get one of the daftest red cards ever last night?
Some red cards could be classed as harsh, others unlucky and others just downright stupid. Javier Mascherano’s red card last night belongs firmly in the latter category.
The Barcelona and former Liverpool player is known as being something of a feisty character on the pitch, but his anger was not directed towards his opponents during Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Ecuador last night; instead it was directed towards the driver of a medical buggy who was carting an injured Mascherano off the pitch with only a few minutes left of a game that eventually finished 1-1.
It could well have been the case that Mascherano was angry with the speed at which he was being carted off the pitch with so little time remaining, but even still there is little excuse for aiming a couple of kicks at the buggy driver in question, kicks that were spotted by the referee and earned the impish midfielder a red card.
Mascherano looked truly incredulous on receiving his marching orders, as did some members of the Argentinean backroom team, but although there was little or no damage done to the medic in question, the video evidence is pretty damning against Mascherano all the same.
In hindsight, Mascherano could really have done with these guys...
