It’s been a while since Luis Suarez has had to take flak for going to ground despite little or no contact, but this is one of the worst dives we’ve seen in a long time.
The Liverpool striker has a bit of reputation for simulation, to the extent that he lampooned himself quite brilliantly in front of David Moyes after the then Everton manager brought it up ahead of a Merseyside derby last year.
Suarez hasn’t had to face criticism for diving for some time – in fairness, he’s had other stuff on his, ahem, plate – but he was back to his old tricks during a clash with Argentina last night, throwing himself to the ground in the penalty area when chasing the ball while sandwiched between two Argentinean defenders, neither of whom seemed to make any contact.
It was enough to con the referee and Suarez scored the resulting spot-kick to help set-up a 3-2 victory, which was only good enough for a World Cup qualification play-off with Jordan, a two-legged affair that Suarez and his compatriots are almost certain to win, even without the need for this kind of theatrical performance.
